General aspects

The operation of the El Teniente division requires a significant daily vehicular flow to and from operations, which translates into long times of exposure to risks during transportation.

Approximately 270 buses mobilize approximately 6,500 workers/day and more than 100 trucks are used to transport
commercial products.

Objective and scope

The objective is to provide management tools to contribute to the reduction of high potential incidents associated with the transportation of people and products, through the timely management of risk situations in driving.

Technological solutions are sought that allow online, real-time monitoring of driver behavior in order to report risk situations.

Solution requirements

  • Implement sensorization of the bus and truck fleet. As a minimum, GPS, third eye and sensors for fatigue and
    drowsiness detection should be installed. It is desirable that the technology be agnostic and interoperable with different equipment and brands for the capture of information from computers of mobile equipment.
  • It should integrate online and in real time all the information captured in a single platform and generate behavioral analysis and deviations from standards in order to identify high-risk behaviors according to traffic regulations and Codelco’s internal procedures.
  • Record, follow up and manage driving deviations in a centralized way. Generate real-time alerts (max. 5 minutes) of at least the following risk situations: road/rail deviations, speed limits and distances, abrupt changes in speed/direction, risk of collision, detection of drowsiness, fatigue, driver distraction, among others.
  • Ability to incorporate in advance “perfect trip” characteristics (including driving speeds and gears), as well as realistic adherence to such planning.
  • Automatic and configurable reporting with different indicators according to hierarchical levels (driver, shift
    manager, contract manager and superintendent).
  • The technology must be validated and implemented in the industry.

Current Problem


The fleet of buses and trucks does not have sufficient sensorization or technology to monitor and manage road behavior in a comprehensive manner.


Difficulty in carrying out preventive and corrective actions to reduce possible driving
deviations that may lead to traffic accidents.

When does the problem occur?

During the movement of buses and trucks to and from the El Teniente Division.

How is it currently resolved?

Currently, GPS and third eye information, among others, is available in an independent and non-integrated manner. In addition, these information is obtained after the occurrence of the events, which makes it impossible to act proactively during the generation of substandard behavior.
