Challenge

Avoid the plugging of the chutes in the pebble circuit

Solutions are sought to reduce the
frequency of cleaning and maintenance
of the transfer chute, due to the
agglomeration of oversize ore (pebbles).

Aim and scope
Solutions are sought to reduce the frequency of cleaning and maintenance of the transfer chute, due to the agglomeration of oversize ore (pebbles).

Operation and processes involved
Challenge requested by Minera Escondida, Concentrator Plant, Laguna Seca.

Current situation
The oversize mineral (pebbles) from the SAG mill, has a high content of clays, moisture and fine mineral, which agglomerates and adheres to the walls of the chute, causing the chute transfer section to decrease and, therefore, cleaning work must be done to maintain the processing capacity.

Problem occurrence
It occurs when the clay content, moisture and/or fine particle size of the material is high.

Consequences
Unscheduled cleaning of the transfer chutes must be carried out, generating in some cases line stoppage and loss of productivity, reducing the processing capacity from 1000 to 400 ton/h. Cleaning tasks imply exposure of workers to high particulate matter pollution environments and exposure to safety risks associated with the execution of the task.

Current solution
Cleaning of chutes by workers using high pressure water jet machine, which is done inside and outside the chute.

Proven technologies
No technologies have been tested.

Supply Innovation BHP

aims to promote the development of projects between the Company and the Suppliers with an associative approach, where the design and construction of the solution for the “Challenge” detected by an area of the Operation is addressed jointly. In this way, the generated projects develop solutions that add value to the Company and the suppliers build capacities and competencies that translate in more and better business opportunities.

Expande program

The Open Innovation in Mining Program, Expande, is a public-private initiative designed and carried out by Fundación Chile. The purpose is to drive innovation and make possible a better future for global mining, promoting the mining ecosystem in Chile along with building a collaborative model that enables the best solutions for the high complexity challenges of mining today and tomorrow.
