Challenge

Prevention and control of unauthorized entry into industrial areas

Solutions are sought that allow the surveillance of both the industrial area and its perimeter and surroundings, detecting and alerting in a timely
manner the unauthorized entry to the facility of people and vehicles.

Aim and scope

Solutions are sought that allow the surveillance of both the industrial area and its perimeter and surroundings, detecting and alerting in a timely manner the unauthorized entry to the facility of people and vehicles. The technological solution is required to:
• Allow permanent and timely surveillance of the industrial area and its perimeter, including monitoring the status of security barriers.
• Allow the detection of unauthorized people or equipment entering the outer ring in the first place and the entire security area in a timely manner. It is desirable that the solution has the ability to identify faces and track their movements and that it also has deterrents.
• Issue alerts in a timely manner, without false positives or false negatives.
• Be compatible with the environmental and operational conditions of Compañía Minera Spence.

Operation and processes involved
Spence Safety and Industrial Protection.

Current problem
Even when physical barriers have been implemented to restrict access to the mining company’s industrial area, such as the construction of trenches in the ground and the installation of security fences, unauthorized entries take place, aimed at stealing elements of high economic value such as copper cathodes and industrial cables, generating risks to workers, economic losses and delays in the supply and logistics processes.

Consequences
Unauthorized entries generate worker risk exposure, economic loss and reduced performance in supply and logistics.

When does the problem occur?
The risk of unauthorized entry is always present – 24/7 – however, there is a greater occurrence of events during nighttime hours.

How is it currently resolved?
Surveillance services provide field personnel to make rounds and inspection patrols both in the industrial area and to the perimeter protection barriers. In addition, surveillance is supported by the use of thermal and night vision cameras.

Tested technologies
• Night vision cameras.
• Thermal cameras.

Supply Innovation BHP

aims to promote the development of projects between the Company and the Suppliers with an associative approach, where the design and construction of the solution for the “Challenge” detected by an area of the Operation is addressed jointly. In this way, the generated projects develop solutions that add value to the Company and the suppliers build capacities and competencies that translate in more and better business opportunities.

Expande program

The Open Innovation in Mining Program, Expande, is a public-private initiative designed and carried out by Fundación Chile. The purpose is to drive innovation and make possible a better future for global mining, promoting the mining ecosystem in Chile along with building a collaborative model that enables the best solutions for the high complexity challenges of mining today and tomorrow
