Reduction of vibration produced by blasting in open pit mine

Compañía Minera Teck CDA has asked Expande to prospect the local and international ecosystem to identify technological solutions that respond to the technical challenge “Reduction of vibration produced by blasting in open pit mine.

Compañía Minera Teck CDA has asked Expande to prospect the local and international ecosystem to identify technological solutions that respond to the technical challenge “Reduction of vibration produced by blasting in open pit mine.

General aspects
During the extraction of minerals in open pit mines, blasting operations are carried out producing shock waves and therefore vibration and noise that can be perceived by the inhabitants of nearby settlements. Vibration levels will depend on a number of factors and variables that mining planning must consider. At Teck CDA the vibration produced by blasting are currently below the maximum allowed by Chilean regulations, therefore, a maximum number of drilling wells is determined for each blast shot. However, since the mine is located close to a populated area, Teck CDA is interested in taking additional measures to further minimize the perception of blasting operations and thus ensure the quality of life of the inhabitants. In this context, Expande will identify technological solutions that reduce the vibrations produced by blasting without affecting the continuity of extractive activities and mineral processing at the plant.

Objectives of this prospection
Identify technological solutions that reduce the vibrations produced by blasting operations. These solutions should increase the number of drilling wells per event and/or an increase in the amount of blasted ore per drilling well.

Solution requirements
The proposed solution must consider the following conditions:
• Minimal interference with operation.
• A minimal presence of workers in the field.
• Do not generate environmental impacts such as: higher amounts of particulate matter emissions or noise.
• Satisfy the safety and security guidelines of Compañía Minera Teck CDA.
