SafetyTech Mining Challenge

In Chile, during 2024, three fatal accidents were recorded in medium and large-scale mining operations. These incidents highlight the importance of continuing to address safety as a critical issue— one that requires the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in the sector.

In this context, Expande, with the support of the National Suppliers Roundtable, in partnership with Sernageomin and under the auspices of the Ministry of Mining, has launched for the second consecutive year the SafetyTech Mining Challenge. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of innovation and technology to enhance safety in the mining industry by connecting common industry challenges with the best technological solutions available worldwide.

Additionally, it seeks to create a collaborative space among mining companies focused on innovation and safety, through an Open Innovation process.

What are we looking for? Challenges

We are looking for solutions that address three key safety challenges:

Cross-cutting

Behavior Management
and Risk Aversion

We seek innovative solutions (technological, managerial, or otherwise) that help mitigate or prevent risky behaviors among workers. Proposed solutions may include a wide range of approaches—from data monitoring and analysis to behavior modification through interactive and training technologies. We’re looking for flexible and effective tools that enhance safety and foster a culture of prevention.

Mine Processes

Safe Operation of Light and
Heavy Vehicles

We are looking for innovative solutions (technological, managerial, or otherwise) that can proactively anticipate and respond to hazardous driving conditions, considering both human factors and environmental conditions in operational settings. S These solutions may address various risks, including fatigue, drowsiness, reduced visibility, extreme conditions, human-machine interaction, and vehicle-to-vehicle coordination.

Plant Processes

Fire Detection and Management in Leaching and Concentrator Plants

We are looking for innovative solutions (technological, managerial, or otherwise) that enable early fire detection, timely response, and comprehensive fire management in leaching and concentrator plants. The goal is to reduce operational risks, protect personnel, minimize damage to critical infrastructure, and ensure operational continuity.
