Search for emerging solutions to improve safety performance in BHP operations.
BHP, in partnership with Expande, is pleased to launch the Fatality Elimination Program to the national ecosystem. This builds on and aligns with our current collaborative work with Expande (mining open innovation program).
* Join the virtual launch event that will be held on September 23 at 10:00 a.m. via Webex, where you can learn in detail about BHP’s global fatality elimination strategy and clarify your doubts about the challenges and more.
Returning home safely at the end of each day remains BHP’s number one priority.
BHP is increasing its efforts towards elimination of fatalities and has therefore begun a global safety improvement initiative that will allow for substantial change to eliminate fatalities in all areas of the company.
“Without a doubt, we must become an even more secure company. We have been reducing the rate of serious or very serious injuries, but this is not enough. We must focus on eliminating fatal accidents and high-potential injuries. ” – Mike Henry, CEO, BHP
The call is for suppliers interested in providing an EIO (expression of interest) “expression of interest”, who may submit a high-level proposal through any of the options:
1.- Open call
2.- Call for a challenge
The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2020.
Interested companies and individuals can apply with more than one solution.
The information received through this call will be part of a process to identify solutions for this first stage of the Program. The areas addressed in this call may or may not present an opportunity for the external market in the future.
Your EOI will be reviewed by the BHP team, which will make a shortlist and communicate directly with the selected providers.
BHP is committed to informing all providers who submitted an EOI about the outcome of the process.
Understand current focus areas for BHP and participate in future conversations to eliminate fatalities and reduce risk in global operations.
Use this relationship opportunity as a starting point to become a potential supplier, beyond this security initiative.
The program invites you to present solutions through two options:
The OTR tire (Off-the-Road tire), is a highly necessary supply for the operation of any load vehicle and plays an enabling role in ore transportation within the extraction process. The […]
IrAs mining projects increase their operation time and growth, they are subject to changes in their form and structure, which, despite having been considered in their designs and construction, need to be monitored and modeled with precision to avoid catastrophic situations.
IrBreakdown voltages and energy leaks are common in EW tankhouses in copper operations. Its monitoring is manual, costly and slow. TESRA adapted existing technology to develop an automatic thermal control […]
IrThe efficiency of a metallurgic process depends, to a large extent, of the adequate and timely operational decision making in light of the variability of the physical and chemical quality […]
IrThe climatic conditions and high altitude present in Chilean mining, damage heavy-duty haul truck engines, eroding their components and reducing their lifecycle.
IrThe Trommel is a classification system per size of ore coming from the mills. It downstream allows passing of the ore complying with required grading and returns the one requiring […]
IrWater plays a significant role in copper production. It mainly participates in the concentration, hydrometallurgical, foundry and refinery processes.
IrLabour productivity in the mining industry dropped 20% in comparison with 2000, in Chile and internationally, as stated by the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco) in 2014. This is an important […]
IrHighService Technology developed a mill lining and wear plates abrasion sensor (the SSD technology) which allows online detection of the components
IrLandslides and mass movements can endanger workers and could cause the total shutdown of the mine. Gesecology developed a technology that integrates and correlates geotechnical and geological data, using mathematical […]
IrManual technical conciliation for slope design and construction is time consuming and its results may be inaccurate. Geoblast developed and implemented a software, which compares and consolidates geotechnical data and […]
IrThe availability of mining power shovels is an important factor for extraction and loading processes.
IrA central component of BHP’s safety improvement initiative is evaluating industry best practices and bringing together a wide range of insights, experience, and innovation to achieve the goal of fatality elimination.
Therefore, BHP and Expande invite organizations to present their solutions and emerging innovations that can improve safety and reduce risk to people in BHP’s global operations.
The program offers an opportunity to:
1. Increase the visibility of your products, services and solutions within BHP operations.
2. Understand current focus areas for BHP and participate in future conversations to eliminate fatalities and reduce risk in global operations.
3. Use this relationship opportunity as a starting point to become a potential supplier, beyond this security initiative.
The program invites you to present solutions through two options:
BHP has established key areas for security initiatives to be implemented in the next 18 months. These focus on BHP’s top ten risks:
1- Vehicles and mobile equipment
Open pit
Subterranean mine
Exterior
2- Falling objects
3- Electrical (including electric arc or explosion)
4- Fire and explosion
5- Release of energy (excluding electricity)
6- Fall from height
7- Geotechnical fault
8- Lifting
9- Entrapment or crushing
10- Loss of containment
If you have a solution that can eliminate or reduce any of these 10 risks, please fill out the call form and briefly describe your solution and its benefits.
To prepare your answers, please see the questions on the open call form. You can attach a case study to your presentation.
InscrÃbete AquiWithin the top 10 risks, BHP has identified specific challenge areas that they would like to address. We invite specific solutions to these challenges to be submitted by completing the form, option call for challenge.
See more details and apply to our current challenges:
1- Multiple risks or general category
Improve understanding of hazards in the workplace
Better understanding of control applications to prepare your answers, please see the questions on the challenge submission form. You can attach a case study to your presentation.
2- Falling objects, lifts and falls from height
Identification and management of exclusion zones
Identification of changes in the task environment
Reduce exposure of personnel to tasks at height
Establishment and supervision of load limits
3- Vehicles and mobile equipment
Maintain separation between person and vehicle
Ensuring that a vehicle does not drift off the road
Ensure the use of a mitigating control: Seat belt
Works near edges
Avoid driver distraction during work hours
Guarantee the operation of the equipment within the safety limits according to road conditions
Improve roads, intersections, signs and information
4- Geotechnical, fire, explosion and loss of containment risks
Exclusion zones
Identification of geotechnical hazards
Geotechnical design compliance
5- Electric, energy release, entrapment / crush
Incorrect use of piping and instrumentation plans or diagrams
Alerts in the presence of electrical energy
Reduce energy transfer from operating equipment
