Optimization of Safety in Reversing Maneuvers for Haul Trucks

Faena: Centinela Mine.

Deadline 11/02/2025

Closing Time 4:00 pm

In the exploitation of open pit mines, the transport of material from the work face to points such as the primary crushing plant, stockpiles and dumps is an essential task. For this purpose, extraction trucks (CAEX) are used which, upon arrival at the destination point, verify the conditions of the area before starting the positioning maneuvers. This process includes reversing, to reach the final position required for proper unloading of the material. During the reversing of the truck, the operator loses direct visibility of the area, which generates safety risks for people and possible damage to the equipment.

During the CAEX equipment reversing maneuver.

– People exposure to risk.

– Potential equipment damage.

– Production loss.

Installation of temporary signals. Manual guidance.

No technologies have been tested.

Consulting, advising, modeling and engineering studies.

1. The solution must allow visual monitoring of the rear area of the CAEX equipment from the cabin.

2. The solution must have heavy duty characteristics, resistant to impacts, vibrations, particulate material and different environmental conditions, among others.

3.Visual range. Allows operation in low visibility conditions such as presence of particulate material and/or low light conditions.

4.Ability to calculate distances to reference points or elements.

5. Ability to issue alarms according to configurable parameters.

6.Ability to analyze images with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify risks and scenarios of operation outside safety standards.

7. Ability to connect to external systems (desirable).

8.Ability to issue reports including performance indicators (desirable).

Identify technological solutions to increase the level of safety during the reversing maneuvers of haul mining trucks, CAEX, for the unloading of material in dumps, primary crusher or other unloading point. The solutions must consider at least one of the following categories:

1. Reversing camera: optical camera system with wide range of vision installed on board the CAEX equipment and allowing the driver to visualize the rear area of the equipment, during its reversing. In addition, the solution must have the capacity to support maneuvers: at least distance measurement and visualization and issuance of alerts according to configurable conditions.

2. Connection and reportability: With the capacity to record and store operation data: type and quantity of maneuvers, maneuver time, origin and destination points, equipment and driver, among others. In addition, capacity to connect with external management systems such as dispatch rooms or integrated operations center.

3. Artificial Intelligence: With the capacity to process and analyze images autonomously, allowing the identification of different conditions or factors that impact safety, such as: level of visibility, presence of obstacles or objects, safety limits for maneuvers, compliance with safety standards, among others.
