Rapid alcohol and drug screening

Faena: Los Pelambres Mine

Deadline 01/12/2022

Closing Time 4:00 pm

At Minera Los Pelambres, conventional alcohol and drug tests are performed randomly on workers entering the site. This randomness reaches approximately 20% of those who enter, and the results take between 5-10 minutes to obtain. Given the above, it is necessary to increase the number of people who undergo a qualitative alcohol and drug test (>80%) as well as to reduce the time it takes to provide the results.

It is required to implement a system or technology that allows for the rapid and qualitative detection of the potential presence of alcohol and/or drugs in people entering the operation.

  • Given that congestion must be avoided at the entrance to the plant, the solution could be implemented either at access control points (sentry boxes) or eventually in means of transportation.
  • Sampling should ensure at least 80% of those who enter the mine.
  • Preliminary qualitative results in less than 30 seconds.
  • It is desirable that the devices to be used for screening are of such dimensions that facilitate their mobility by industrial security workers.
  • It is desirable that the solution is complemented with technologies that allow the identification of the tested worker (for example: facial recognition of the people being tested).
  • Online data delivery in real time, as well as weekly reports with statistical information on monitoring.
  • Ensure the integrity of workers and safeguard the confidentiality of data.
  • A degree of technological maturity is required at least at experimental validation level (TRL≥4).
  • Must comply with Antofagasta Minerals occupational health and safety standards.
  • It must consider 24-hour continuous operation, which means operating under low visibility conditions.

Solutions involving the sampling of biological fluids are excluded.

Conventional saliva tests are performed in the case of drugs, alcohol volume tests in bus environments and alcotest in people.

  • Reduction of people entering work sites under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
  • Increase in the number of workers tested for alcohol and drugs.
  • Decrease of time in delivery of test results.
  • Easy handling by industrial protection staff.
  • > 60% of workers are tested.
  • Decrease in time of delivery of results.
